INTRODUCTION TO DHU – DONGHUA UNIVERSITY
DHU is a multi-disciplinary university with a wide range of undergraduate and graduate degree programs across a vast field of disciplines including engineering, economics, management, literature and art, laws, science, and education.
It has 12 colleges and schools, offering 54 undergraduate programs, 59 master’s degree programs, 30 doctoral degree programs, and 5 postdoctoral research programs, among which are 6 state key disciplines and 7 Shanghai municipal key disciplines.
Academic achievements have found applications in areas such as aeronautics, military science, new material, architecture, and environment protection. The number of valid patents ranks top 12 among Chinese colleges and universities.
About DHU
Donghua University (DHU), formerly China Textile University, was founded in 1951. Located in the downtown area in Shanghai and adjacent to Hongqiao Economic Development Zone, DHU is one of the state-key universities directly under the Ministry of Education of China.
Its feature disciplines, such as Fashion Design, Textile Engineering, International Trade, Material Science, and Information Technology have received high reputation both domestically and abroad.
As early as 1954, DHU commenced to accept international students who were among the first group of overseas students enrolled by Chinese universities. To date, DHU has brought up a huge number of international students from over 100 countries.
Almost all of undergraduate programs, postgraduate and research programs are open to international students. Besides, non-degree programs including Chinese language programs, Degree-Preparation program, advanced study programs, and a variety of short-term programs are available to international students.
DHU Library
Donghua University Libraries consists of two major facilities: West Yan’an Road Campus Branch and Songjiang University Town Campus Branch. The University Libraries are a strategic asset for the University, providing intellectual leadership and extraordinary information experiences toward the advancement of knowledge.
Our vision is to inspire learning and discovery through information resources, collaboration, and expertise. DHU Library West Yan’an Road Campus Branch is a newly renovated five story state-of-the-art facility occupying a massive 9266 square meters. Inside you’ll find a 738 seat, 2250 square meter reading room, multimedia reading rooms, newly installed high-tech inquiry terminals, and a Xerox service center.
DHU Library is also a strategic partner with over 60 institutions from more than 50 countries, providing students and visitors with access to a vast pool of resources. The library is also home to the international student library, a world-class multimedia reading room and reading center with a library of Chinese language learning materials, dictionaries and other publications.
Interantional Cooperation and Exchange
Donghua University has always paid great attention to international exchange and cooperation. She has established cooperative relationships with over 60 institutions for higher education as well as well-known enterprises around the world.
A great number of overseas students from 83 countries have graduated from the university. She steadily pushes forward the development of joint programs such as Donghua-Carleton IMBA, Sino-German Education for Bachelor Degree of Light Chemical Engineering, and Sino-Japan Education for Bachelor Degree of Fashion Design & Engineering.
She has successfully hosted such major international conferences as International Fashion Forum of Shanghai International Fashion Culture Festival and the 83rd World Conference of Textile Institute. As a result, a dynamic, multi-aspect, and multi-channel prospect of international exchange and cooperation has being formed.
Campus Life
Center for Arts Education
Center for Arts Education is the specialized institute implementing quality-oriented art education in Donghua University. It is in charge of the teaching of cultural and moral elective courses together with the construction and development of Student Art Troupe.
It carries out its work mainly centering on art theory education, skills education, appreciation education and art troupe construction.
Yan’an Road Campus
Located in the middle of the West Yan’An Campus is the Student Service Center. This is where students can buy most of their daily necessities. The complex includes a supermarket, a technology shop, an optical services shop, a book store, hair salon, and various other small shops selling everything from beauty products to accessories.
The main market sells a wide variety of essentials, such as food, bath products, school supplies, and household items. The book store sells both books for school as well as pleasure reading.
This complex allows students to obtain most items they will need at an affordable price and without having to leave campus.
Cash and Golden Dragon Card can be used.
Just near the Students Activity Center and first dining hall on campus, there are Education supermarket, post office, book store, and university performance hall( Jin xiu hui tang).

In the University town, there are quite a lot shopping places, from TESCO supermarket to a common fashion shop., around the campus, there are lots of shops like hair salons, book stores, fruit shops, electricity device shops, cafe, DVD shops on Wenhui street.
Organizations & Clubs
There are a number of organizations and clubs available for international students to participate in. These are arranged through the International Cultural Exchange School (ICES) and the International Student Association (ISA). Some popular clubs available are the iTalk Language and Culture Exchange Club, Snap Photography Club, Musicians Club, ICES Chamber Choir, and various dance clubs.
If students are looking to get more involved in their community then they can also participate in such programs as the Connect Volunteer Outreach Program, Big Brothers Big Sisters Youth Program, or the Resident Advisor Program. Sports Clubs are also available, including the International Student Football and Basketball teams.
For those interested in journalism, there is always need for editors, writers, and photographers for the Campus Times Newspaper Monthly Edition and The Chronicle, which is our annual international student yearbook.
Athletics and Fitness
Other than sports clubs, Donghua also offers many other opportunities for athletics and fitness. The West Yan’An Road campus has a large gymnasium, soccer fields, basketball courts, tennis courts and a running track.
These are all available to students and can be used by showing your student ID card. Most of these resources are free for students; however, tennis court usage requires an hourly fee.
The gymnasium contains an indoor basketball court, climbing wall, weight room, long jump track, and badminton court. So no matter your sports preference, there is sure to be something available for your fitness needs.
Campus Vicinity
The Zhongshan Park shopping center is a favorite among students with many amenities, such as a Carrefour, international designer stores, banks, and restaurants. Zhongshan can be reached within 20 minutes by either bus or metro system.
Within a close walking distance from West Yan’An Road gate there is also a Bank of China, restaurants, tea shops, convenience stores, a post office, a fruit stand, and numerous shops selling everything from shoes to art supplies.
There is also Parksons Mall about a ten minutes walk away with shops and restaurants focused more toward foreign tastes. Most students find that they can find what they need on this road and you will normally meet fellow students along the way
ACCOMMODATION AT DONGHUA UNIVERSITY
Yan’An Road Campus
International Students at the West Yan’An Road campus will live in one of the three International Student Apartments. All apartments have both single and double rooms available.
Each room contains a private bath, furniture, A/C, telephone, Television, refrigerator and internet. Each floor also provides washing machines and a community kitchen with electric stoves and microwave. Students can use a washing machine card to wash their own clothes or may use the charge laundry services in the Laundry Room on the First Floor of Apartment #1 instead.
Washing machine cards can be purchased in the Laundry Room. A Washing Machine Card costs 30Y for 10 washes. Laundry Services charge based on the services needed. For security reasons, all international student apartments are only accessible by using your international student card. Visitors can be signed in at the entrance security desk, but are not permitted to stay overnight.
There are two dining halls on West Yan’An Road campus. They are referred to as #1 and #2. Dining Hall #1 has three floors. The first and second floors contain a variety of Chinese foods, including steamed foods, a noodle station, a bakery, a cooked-to-order station, and a hot skillet station. The third floor contains the school restaurant and the Muslim dining hall. Dining Hall #2 contains another bakery/snack stand and more Chinese foods options.
All Dining Halls use an electronic card system. Your dining card can be obtained at the International Student Office #122 and more money can be added at the second floor window of Dining Hall #1. Breakfast is available from 7:00-9:00 AM, lunch from 11:00-13:30, and dinner from 16:30-21:00.
Songjiang Campus
International Students at Songjiang Campus will live in the teacher’s house(for female students,single room) or No.5 international students apartment (for male students,double room), each room has furniture,A/C,telephone, Television, refrigerator and internet Jet inside.
In addition, public service facilities like washing machine, microwave, drinking water machine are provided in the same building.Students should apply an internet account from telecom compay like China telecom, China mobile etc, internet price is about RMB 100 yuan/month.
Donghua university gives each student a free electricity & hotwater ticket each month. When a student use more electricity or hotwater than the quota, he should pay for it himself.
Students who live on Songjiang Campus have many options to have meal, two dining halls on campus with a Muslim dining place, many restaurants in Songjiang university town street which is just 5 minutes’ walk.

Short Specific Programs
Short Specific Programs During each semester, several short-term programs specifically focus on language skills development are opened in the afternoons or on Saturdays to let the students tailor their choice to meet their individual needs and language learning goals. Each class will open based on a certain number of students and hold 8 to 12 students.
